Service Firms for Wind and Solar Energy

From NRDC

As renewable energy production increases so does the need for service providers offering support for research, production, optimization, equipment, storage, and more.

The oil and gas industry has a robust ecosystem of service providers for everything from hardware and software to equipment and R&D. The green energy industry is starting to see the same type of ecosystem form.

Right now, the landscape of support services for renewable energy companies is fragmented—most companies have a 1-2% market share and offer a narrow sliver of services compared to the end-to-end providers we’re used to seeing in oil and gas.

One startup, aptly named Clean Energy Services (CES), is setting out to be for wind and solar what Schlumberger and Halliburton have been for oil and gas. CES is looking at the entire lifecycle of wind and solar assets—including decommissioning.

The company is focused on:

  • Wind turbine decommissioning

  • High-tech wind turbine servicing

  • Solar preventive maintenance

  • Solar repowering

Right now, many of these services are provided by OEMs or small, focused service providers. CES is working to change that—renew it, if you will.
