Talos Energy CCS Projects

Talos Energy, an offshore oil producer, has been making waves in the carbon capture and storage (CCS) space lately.

This month, Talos signed a lease agreement with Texas for more than 40,000 acres under the Gulf of Mexico for the Bayou Bend CCS, a carbon capture site off the coast of Jefferson County. Capable of storing up to 275 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, the project is “the first ever major offshore carbon sequestration site” in the U.S., Talos said.

Among other projects, Talos is also planning a large CCS project along the Mississippi River, which is expected to have a capacity of 500 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Talos joins oil majors like ExxonMobil and Occidental in big pushes to pull carbon from the atmosphere. The company formed its Talos Low Carbon Solutions business, and is working to make CCS a scalable, profitable, meaningful part of their overall portfolio.

Talos is an example of an oil and gas company taking steps to participate in the energy transition—adapting and investing in carbon removal.
