Green Jobs Grow

The demand for green jobs is on the rise as countries around the world aim to reduce their carbon footprints. According to the Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2021 from IRENA, it is estimated that the clean energy industry will create up to 43 million new jobs by 2050.

Changing climate policies and a global commitment to halting climate change are driving demand. "We expect to see millions of new jobs created globally in the next decade driven by new climate policies and commitments," says LinkedIn chief executive Ryan Roslansky.

That’s not a new trend. In its 2022 Global Green Skills Report, LinkedIn reported that the share of global green talent increased from 9.6% in 2015 to 13.3% percent in 2021.

Demand is outpacing the supply of green skills, and a shortage of green skills could happen over the next five years. The gap is growing, even as the oil and gas sector fears decreasing job growth, which makes the transfer to renewable work enticing.

Oil and gas professionals are a vital talent resource in the renewable energy industry, especially in project management, engineering, construction, finance, and operations.

Iron & Earth is an organization led by oil and gas workers that encourages workers in the fossil fuel sector to consider taking the skills they already have and using them for jobs in the green energy industry.

Energy is transitioning and so is the work surrounding it.
